Zimbabwe: Pre-trial detention of human rights defenders Ms Molly Chimhanda and Messrs Gilbert Mabusa and Fadzai Decemberposted on: 2011/12/09

On 5 December 2011, human rights defenders and Media Monitoring Project of Zimbabwe (MMPZ) members Ms Molly Chimhanda and Messrs Gilbert Mabusa and Fadzai December were arrested after being requested to present themselves at the Gwanda Police Station to “answer questions” about a workshop which took place in the area on 24 November 2011.

On 10 October 2011, human rights defender Mr Farai Maguwu was detained by Zimbabwean officials at Harare International Airport. While detained Maguwu was subjected to questioning regarding his trip and his organisation's human rights activities, and his luggage was searched.

Zimbabwe: Suspected poisoning and planting at property of Women of Zimbabwe Arise (WOZA)posted on: 2011/06/28

Members of Women of Zimbabwe Arise (WOZA) were rushed to hospital with symptoms of poisoning following a visit to a property used for WOZA meetings in Suburbs, Bulawayo on 22 June 2011. The property had been vacated the previous day by the Zimbabwe Republic Police under the terms of an order of the High Court of Bulawayo of 20 June 2011, after a 12-day occupation. The premises were found damaged, some items were missing and suspicious articles planted inside the house and in a vehicle parked in the yard. WOZA is a women's rights organisation with a country-wide membership of over 75,000 men and women.

Human rights defender Ms Jenni Williams has been arrested in Harare outside a court house following the release of 83 protesters from police detention. She was released later the same day amidst emerging reports that the 83 protesters had been ill-treated whilst in detention.

Human rights defender Mr Farai Maguwu remains in detention in hospital in Harare, Zimbabwe following his arrest on 3 June 2010. A new decision on bail, which was denied on 10 June, is expected on 21 June.

Zimbabwe: Detention of human rights defenders Ms Ellen Chademana and Mr Ignatius Muhamba, members of Gays and Lesbians of Zimbabwe (GALZ)posted on: 2010/05/25

On 21 May 2010, police raided the offices of Gays and Lesbians of Zimbabwe (GALZ) in Milton Park, Harare, and arrested human rights defenders Ms Ellen Chademana and Mr Ignatius Muhamba, both employees of GALZ. GALZ is an association founded in 1990 that advocates social tolerance for sexual minorities and the repeal of homophobic legislation in Zimbabwe.

Human rights defender Mr Okay Machisa has been arrested in the afternoon of today, 23 March 2010, in Harare. Okay Machisa is the National Director of Zimbabwe Human Rights Association (ZimRights), one of the main human rights organisations in the country, counting more than 700,000 members.

Since 16 February 2010, executive members of the Zimbabwe Human Rights Association (ZimRights) have received a number of threatening messages. On 17 February, Front Line issued an urgent appeal on the threats against Mr Okay Machisa, ZimRights National Director. On 25 February, Mr Nunurai Jena, Mr Netsai Kaitano and Mr Jabulisa Tshuma also received threats.

Human rights defenders, Mr Thulani Ndhlovu and Mr Ndodana Ndhlovu, were arrested on 28 October 2009 in Dete, Hwange for conducting a public outreach workshop, allegedly without police clearance. Ndodhana Ndhlovu was released later that day while Thulani Ndhlovu remained in custody until this morning, when he was released on bail.

Zimbabwe: NANGO members Mrs Dadirai Chikwengo and Mr Cephas Zinhumwe released, charges pendingposted on: 2009/10/28

Human rights defenders Mrs Dadirai Chikwengo and Mr Cephas Zinhumwe, arrested on 25 October 2009 after the NGO Directors' Summer School held on 23-24 October in Victoria Falls, were released on bail on 27 October 2009. Charges against them, however, are still pending. Dadirai Chikwengo is the Chairwoman of the Board of National Association of Non Governmental Organisations (NANGO) and Cephas Zinhumwe is its Chief Executive Officer.

Front Line is concerned following reports that members of Women of Zimbabwe Arise (WOZA) were beaten and arrested on 25 February 2009 in Harare. WOZA is a non-governmental organisation working for the advancement of women's rights. WOZA is currently leading a campaign called 'Take the Step' to encourage social participation in Zimbabwe.

Front Line is concerned following reports that two members of Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR), Ms Roselyn Hanzi and Mr Tawanda Zhuwarara, and eight members of Women of Zimbabwe Arise (WOZA) were arrested on 10 February 2009 by unidentified members of the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP). Roselyn Hanzi and Tawanda Zhuwarara are project lawyers with ZLHR.

Members of Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR), particularly Mr Kucaca Phulu and Mr Tineyi Mukweka, on 19 January 2009. ZLHR is a non-profit human rights organisation which aims to promote a culture of human rights in Zimbabwe and encourage the observance of the rule of law. Kucaca Phulu is the regional manager and Tineyi Mukweka is a paralegal of the ZLHR office in Bulawayo.
