Please donate to the Protection Fund
In 2008 Front Line made 152 grants totaling €301,253 to individual human rights defenders and organizations in 42 countries throughout the world. Unfortunately threats against human rights defenders are increasing and the need to provide support is growing.
Our 2009 Small Grants budget is €300,000. We need your help to continue to support at-risk human rights defenders through this crucial progamme.
100% of your donation to The Protection Fund for Human Rights Defenders at Risk will go directly to protect human rights defenders who routinely face death threats, illegal prosecution, imprisonment, violence, and defamation as a result of their non-violent human rights work on behalf of others. "The grant helped me get protection and you can’t belief it. It actually strengthened my desire, devotion and commitment to fighting for human rights and democratic change.....I feel protected where I am but also feel protected by virtue of my association with Front Line, knowing that in the event that my life is under threat over the land project then I have some group to help me out. Front Line is frontlife". Kenyan human rights defender Ken Wafula.
An example of how Front Line helps to protect Human Rights Defenders:
India - Bharosa and The Naz Foundation
Bharosa is a community based organisation that seeks to reduce the risk of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections among vulnerable communities in Lucknow. The Naz foundation is a New Delhi based NGO working on HIV/AIDS and sexual health focusing on prevention as well as treatment. Each organisation received €1000 to fund the purchase of security cameras for both offices. Before the installation of the cameras staff and service users of both The Naz foundation and Bharosa were under constant threat of harassment and abuse. The police were reluctant to take any action in the absence of evidence. Since the installation of the cameras both NGOs have been able to provide the police with evidence. Additionally due to the presence of the cameras incidences of abuse have decreased.
