Further information
Posted 19/10/2007 Between 27 and 29 August 2007, Al Khatib Mohamed Salim, Maisara Izzeldin Mohamed Munowar, Faroug Nuri, Hisham Abbas, Nazmi Mohamed Hamid and his brother Nayif Mohamed Hamid were arrested by the security forces and detained in Dongola prison, in the capital of the Northern Province Wilaya. Rami Hassan Farah, Daoud Suliman and Isam Mohamed Fagir were also arrested and detained in the town of Karma. Daoud Suliman and Isam Mohamed Fagir were later transferred to Dongola prison, and Rami Hassan Farah was released the first week in September. According to reports, Nayif Mohamed Hamid suffers from high blood pressure and is diabetic. He allegedly collapsed on two occasions whilst in detention for not receiving adequate medical attention. He was hospitalised under security forces surveillance at the local health clinic in Dongola before being transferred back to the prison.
Front Line is extremely concerned that the pattern of continued arrest of Kajbar Dam campaigners forms part of an ongoing campaign to force the campaigners to discontinue their peaceful campaign against the construction of the Kajbar Dam in the Nubian region of northern Sudan.
