Iran: Continued detention of Saleh Kamrani and Said Metinpour for representing Azerbaijani community

Lawyer Saleh Kamrani and journalist Sa’id Metinpour are currently being detained in Section 209 of Evin Prison, Tehran. Saleh Kamrani is a lawyer who has represented members of Iran’s discriminated Azerbaijani minority. Both he and Sa’id Metinpour are active in promoting the rights of the Azerbaijani minority in Iran.

Posted 16/11/2007 On 18 August 2007, Saleh Kamrani was arrested by four plain clothes individuals at a family wedding near Tehran. His computer and personal documents were confiscated by the arresting officers. His whereabouts were not disclosed until the 21 August 2007, when he was permitted to make a brief phone call to his family. Since then he has not been allowed any contact with his family or lawyer. They cannot even confirm that he is still alive given, the risk of torture and that he has a serious heart condition.

On 25 May 2007, Sa’id Metinpour was arrested in the north western city of Zenjan. He has been subjected to torture and ill-treatment and is suffering from poor health as a result. He has also spent much of his time in detention in solitary confinement in an attempt to force him into making a videotaped confession. Neither man has been charged, brought to trial, or given access to a lawyer.
