Uganda - UPDATE - Case dismissed against human rights defenders after two years
Front Line welcomes the dismissal of the case against six human rights defenders from the Twerwaneho Listeners Radio Club in Uganda on 23 September 2009, after almost two years of ongoing judicial harassment.
Further Information
Human rights defenders, Mr. Gerard Kankya, Mr Dan Rubonbora, Mr William Gonza, Mr Prosper Businge, Mr Joram Bintamanya and Mr Stephen Rwagweri had been accused with two offences: incitement to violence and defamation and were acquitted on both charges. The Court found that the prosecution had failed to provide sufficient evidence to support the charges and in its ruling stated insufficient evidence was adduced to show that the comments made during the radio show incited violence. The Court also dismissed the second charge when the Prosecution failed to present the material evidence necessary to prove charges of defamation.
