Western Sahara - UPDATE – Human rights defenders Mr Ennaama Asfari released after serving a four month sentence

On 14 December 2009, human rights defender, Mr Ennaama Asfari was released after serving a four-month sentence in prison, having been found guilty of "contempt toward public officials while in the performance of their duty”.

Ennaama Asfari is the co-president of the Comité pour le respect des libertés et des droits humains au Sahara occidental - CORELSO (Committee for the respect of liberties and human rights in the Western Sahara). Ennaama Asfari had reportedly been followed and harassed by the Moroccan police since his participation in a conference on Western Sahara in Algeria in July 2009. Front Line previously issued an appeal and updates on the case in August and September 2009, as it was believed that Ennaama Asfari had been targeted and harassed because of his work in the defence of human rights, especially those of the Sahrawi people.
