Cambodia: Human rights defenders Cheab Chiev and Khoem Sarum acquitted on charge of Disinformation

The CCHR activists - Cheab Chiev and Khoem Sarum - were today acquitted on the charge of Disinformation along with Radio Free Asia Journalist Sok Serei and community representatives Ny San and Seb Sein.

Statement by Cambodian Centre for Human Rights

Unfortunately Ny San was found guilty of destruction of property and was sentenced to five months in prison (he has already served four and a half months and will be released in ten days) and a payment of compensation of $250 to the complainant. In all, we consider the result to be a good one, both the verdict and the reasoning behind it are encouraging - the judge citing a lack of malicious intent on the part of the defendants as the reason for the acquittal.
