Front Line has received the following update with regard to the appeal of human rights defender Mr El Mustapha Addari.

Morocco / Western Sahara- UPDATE - Seven Sahrawi human rights defenders could face harsh sentences before a military courtposted on: 2009/10/21

Front Line was informed today that three lawyers were allowed for the first time to visit three of seven human rights defenders who are detained in prison in Sella city, Morocco. The defenders who met their lawyers were; Mr. Brahim Dahane, Mr. Yahdih Ettarrouzi and Mr. Rachid Sghayar. The lawyers hope that they will be permitted today or tomorrow to meet with the four other defenders, namely; Mr Ali Salem Tamek, Mr Ahmad Anasiri, Mr Saleh Lebayhi, and Ms. Dagja Lachgar.

The Palestinian Human Rights Foundation (Monitor) reported the release of its representative in Maghreb, Hassan Barhoon, who was arrested on 26 February 2009 and sentenced to months in prison for "defaming the judiciary" in a corruption case.

Morocco: UPDATE human rights defender Chekib El-Khiari receives three-year prison sentence and 753,930 Dirham fineposted on: 2009/06/30

According to the official news agency MAP, on 24 June 2009,the Casablanca criminal court of first instance sentenced Mr Chekib El-Khiari to three years in prison and ordered him to pay 753,930 Dirhams to Moroccan customs. The court said that Khayari deposited money in foreign banks without the authorization of Morocco's Exchange Office.

Morocco: New charges brought against human rights defender Mr Chekib El-Khiariposted on: 2009/05/18

Front Line is concerned following reports that human rights defender Mr Chekib El-Khiari, who remains in detention since 17 February 2009, is now facing new charges. On 23 April 2009, Chekib El-Khiari was brought before the Investigating Judge, Jamal Serhane, where he defended himself against the previous allegations that he had “undermined” or insulted state institutions or officials. However, Chekib El-Khiari was surprised when he was informed that three new charges were being brought against him related to violations of customs and currency regulations.
