Iran: Transfer of trade union leader, Mansour Osanloo, to Rajaei Prison in the city of Karaj

Front Line is concerned by reports of the transfer of human rights defender Mansour Osanloo to Rajaei Prison in the city of Karaj. Mansour Osanloo is an advocate of workers' rights and President of the Executive Board of Sherkat-e Vahed (the Syndicate of Workers of Tehran and Suburban Bus Vahed Company), Mansour Osanloo was arrested on 10 July 2007 by security services while he was leaving his place of work. Following his arrest, he was sentenced to five-year imprisonment after being convicted of “anti-regime propaganda” and “activities against national security”.  Read More

Iran: Sentencing of human rights defender and journalist Yusef Azizi Bani Turfi

Front Line is deeply concerned following reports of the sentencing of Yusef Azizi Bani Turfi to five years in prison. Yusef Azizi Bani Turfi is a journalist and writer who has written in defence of the rights of ethnic minorities, particularly the Ahwazi Arab ethnic group to which he belongs. He is also a founder member of the Iranian PEN association, which works to promote and protect the right to freedom of expression.  Read More

Iran: Execution of human rights defender Yaghoub Mehrnehad

Front Line is gravely concerned following reports that human rights defender Yaghoub Mehrnehad has been executed. Yaghoub Mehrnehad was a journalist and human rights defender who worked in defence and promotion of the rights of Baluch peoples in Iran. Yaghoub Mehrnahad was also the founder of Anjoman Sedayeh edalat (Voice of Justice Association), a non-governmental organisation which organised cultural activities for Baluch people.  Read More

Iran: Continued detention of Saleh Kamrani and Said Metinpour for representing Azerbaijani community

Lawyer Saleh Kamrani and journalist Sa’id Metinpour are currently being detained in Section 209 of Evin Prison, Tehran. Saleh Kamrani is a lawyer who has represented members of Iran’s discriminated Azerbaijani minority. Both he and Sa’id Metinpour are active in promoting the rights of the Azerbaijani minority in Iran.  Read More

Iran: Arrest of Zeinab Bayzeydi, Women’s Rights Activist in Mahabad Kurdistan

Posted 18/07/2008 Zeinab Bayzeydi, women’s rights activist, member of the Human Rights Organization of Kurdistan and a member of the One Million Signatures Campaign in the city of Mahabad in Kurdistan Province, was arrested on 9 July 2008. On 5 July 2008, Zeinab Bayzeyd was reportedly summoned by telephone for questioning and interrogated for several hours. She was told to return for interrogation again on 9 July 2008, and after three hours of interrogation, she was arrested on the order of the courts and transferred to a detention center in Mahabad, managed by the Ministry of Information and Security.

Iran: Arrest of nine women's rights defenders during peaceful demonstration

Front Line is deeply concerned following the arrest of nine women's rights defenders during peaceful demonstration outside the Rahe Abrisham Gallery in Tehran, on 12 June 2008. The women's rights defenders, Aida Saadat, an online journalist for Etemad and Change for Equality; Nasrin Sotoode, a women's rights lawyer; Jelve Javaheri, an online journalist for the Change for Equality website; Jilla Baniyagoub, an online journalist with Sarmayeh and the Canon Zeman Irani; Sarah Loghmani and Farideh Ghaeb, both online journalists for Canon Zeman Irani; Alieh Motalbezadeh, a journalist and photographer; and women's rights defenders, Nahid Mirhaj and Nafiseh Azad, were meeting to celebrate the National Day of Solidarity of Iranian Women in objection to discriminatory laws against women in Iran and to review the achievements of the women's rights movement through similar meetings over previous years.  Read More

Iran: Summons issued to human rights defender and women's rights activist Parvin Ardalan

Front Line is deeply concerned following reports that a summons has been issued to Parvin Ardalan to present herself at the Revolutionary Court branch no. 13 on 2 August 2008 on charges of acting against national security through propaganda against the government. These charges relate to her work with websites Change for Equality and Zanestan. Parvin Ardalan is a women's rights defender and one of the founding members of the One Million Signatures Campaign.  Read More

Iran: Inadequate medical treatment for imprisoned human rights defender Emadeddin Baghi

Front Line is deeply concerned following reports that human rights defender Emadeddin Baghi, imprisoned since October 2007, was returned to prison after suffering a heart attack on 7 May 2008. Emadeddin Baghi is the founder of the Association for the Defence of Prisoners' Rights and the Society of the Right to Life Guardians in Iran. He has written extensively on human rights, in particular to criticise the death penalty and to defend the right to freedom of expression. He has received several international awards for his work including the Civil Courage Prize in 2004, the French Human Rights Prize in 2005, and the International Journalist of the Year 2008 at the British Press Awards.  Read More
