India – Fear of arrest and violent assault of human rights defenders Mr Thulasi Thambirajan, and Mr Dharuman Ramasamy in Tamil Nadu

Two human rights defenders Mr Thulasi Thambirajan and Mr Dharuman Ramasamy were assaulted and are now facing prison charges for their exposure of corruption within the local Panchayat in their implementation of the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS). Thulasi Thambirajan is a human rights teacher in the Adi Dravida Welfare Middle School in Varakoor and Dharuman Ramasamy is an organiser in the Citizens for Human Rights Movement (CHRM). Read More

India - Physical assault on human rights defenders, Mr Choudhury Charan Gorh and Mr Shyama Prasad Kurmi

Front Line is deeply concerned following reports of a physical assault on human rights defenders, Mr Choudhury Charan Gorh and Mr Shyama Prasad Kurmi, on 30 June 2009 in Hailakandi, Assam. Mr Choudhury Charan Gorh is the secretary of NGO HELP, a grass-roots organisation which monitors corruption in the local self-government (the Panchayati Raj) and works for the practical realisation of rural development. Mr Shyama Prasad Kurmi is also a member of NGO HELP and of the All Assam Students Union (AASU) which advocates for students' rights in the province and campaigns against corruption and mis-governance. Read More

Morocco: UPDATE human rights defender Chekib El-Khiari receives three-year prison sentence and 753,930 Dirham fine

According to the official news agency MAP, on 24 June 2009,the Casablanca criminal court of first instance sentenced Mr Chekib El-Khiari to three years in prison and ordered him to pay 753,930 Dirhams to Moroccan customs. The court said that Khayari deposited money in foreign banks without the authorization of Morocco's Exchange Office. Read More
