Subsequent to the Front Line Urgent Appeal issued on 16 June 2010, Front Line has received the following new information concerning the arrest and detention of human rights defender Mr Azimjan Askarov: Azimjan Askarov is reportedly being subjected to ill-treatment in detention in Bazar Korgon police station. Azimjan Askarov has not yet been informed of the charges against him and is being detained incommunicado. Read More

India / Manipur – UPDATE – Four jailed human rights defenders released on bail while four others remain in detention

Human rights defenders Thiyam Dinesh, Liklabam Tompok, S Nando and Chungjel Koireng, civil society activists with All Manipur United Committee Organisation - AMUCO, have been released from detention on 29 September 2009 after being granted bail against a surety bond of 50,000 Indian Rupees (approx. €720) each. The activists had been arrested by police commandos on 14 September 2009 and were remanded in police custody for 15 days after appearing before the court on 15 September. The arrests took place in connection with ongoing civil protests against summary executions by the police in Manipur. Read More

Egypt: UPDATE Human rights defender Mosaad Abu Fagr kept in detention despite new court order to release him

The Administrative Court of Egypt has suspended the decision of the Minister of the Interior to detain Mossaad Soliman Hassan , known as Mosaad Abu Fagr. On 16 June 2009, the court issued an explicit immediate release order, ruling that the ministry should bear all the expenses of the litigation and referred the case to the board of state commissioners. Front Line expresses concern regarding the continued detention of human rights defender Lachit Bordoloi, who was arrested on 11 February 2008. Lachit Bordoloi is a journalist and adviser of Manab Adhikar Sangram Samiti (MASS), an organisation working to defend civil and human rights in the Assam region. He is also the convenor of the Peoples Committee for Peace Initiatives in Assam (PCPIA) and a member of the Peoples Consultative Group (PCG), an organisation set up to initiate peace discussions between the Indian Government and the United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA). Read More
