(Bangkok, April 7, 2011) – Cambodia’s draft law regulating associations and nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) should be abandoned because it will undermine rather than promote civil society in the country, Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International, Forum-Asia, Global Witness, Southeast Asia Press Alliance, Front Line Defenders,FIDH and OMCT within the framework of the Observatory for the Protection of Human Rights Defenders said today.

Dublin: New report documents harassment and intimidation of human rights defenders in Syria posted on: 2009/05/21

This report is a summary of a study conducted by Mazen Darwish from the Syrian Centre for Media & Freedom of Expression which analyses the impact of current Syrian Government polices on the human rights climate. The study lists the names of more than 400 activists from different parts of Syria who are subject to travel bans, among them 101 human rights defenders, 75 of whom have been identified as members of 12 different human rights groups, including 20 women.

Kyrgyzstan: Arrest of human rights defender, Ms Tolekan Ismailovaposted on: 2009/03/19

Front Line is concerned by reports of the arrest of Ms Tolekan Ismailova following her participation in a peaceful demonstration in Bishkek, on 18 March 2009. Tolekan Ismailova is the Chairperson of the Human Rights Centre “Citizens Against Corruption”. Although she was released later the same day, after the charges against her were dismissed, Front Line remains concerned at this evidence of an ongoing pattern of harassment.

Front Line is deeply concerned following reports of the alleged enforced disappearance of human rights defender James M. Balao on 17 September 2008. James M. Balao is a member of the Cordillera Peoples Alliance (CPA), an independent group of non-governmental organisations in the Cordillera Region. CPA works to promote democracy and protect the rights of indigenous peoples.

Colombia: Death threats against human rights defendersposted on: 2008/04/01

Front Line is deeply concerned following information received concerning death threats against four human rights defenders during the month of March 2008: Isabelino Valencia, the legal representative for the region of Lower Naya, and Frank William Cayapur Delgado, Edward Mina Cuero and Yimi Armando Jansasoy Muñoz who work with the human rights organisation, the Comisión Intereclesial de Justicia y Paz (Intereclesial Commission for Justice and Peace).
