Human rights defenders Mr Roberto Malini and Mr Dario Picciau were informed on 12 February 2010 that they had been sentenced, on 5 November 2009, to the payment of a fine for disturbing a police operation in Pesaro in December 2008. Roberto Malini and Dario Picciau are co-presidents of EveryOne Group, a non-governmental organisation supporting Roma people and refugees. Read More

Oman – Judicial prosecution against journalist Mr A’sem Al-Sheedi for writing on police corruption

On 8 December 2009, the general director of the Police and Customs in Oman submitted a penal suit against Mr A’sem Al-Sheedi, accusing him of denouncing the police in an article published in Oman newspaper on 7 December 2009. A’sem Al-Sheedi was summoned by the Prosecution Office on 12 December 2009 and charged with "slander against the police apparatus" and "false testimony", for refusing to reveal his source of information. Read More

Russian Federation: Human rights defender, Mr Alexei Sokolov, facing new charges

Human rights defender, Mr Alexei Sokolov, is facing new charges following his release from detention on 31 July 2009 in Yekaterinburg. Alexei Sokolov is the chairman of the NGO Pravovaja osnova (Legal Foundation) which defends prisoners’ rights and throughout his career, he has repeatedly denounced the use of torture by the Russian police. Read More

The trial of Bahraini human rights defender Mohamed Abdul Nabi Al-Maskati for “running an unlicenced association” has been adjourned until 15 January 2009. Mohamed Abdul Nabi Al-Maskati is the founder of the Bahrain Youth Society for Human Rights (BYSHR), which organises training workshops, monitors and documents human rights violations and participates in forming a regional network for young human rights activists in eight Arab countries.
