Iran: Update - Appeal against sentencing of human rights defender Ms Jila Baniyaghoob to one year in prison and 30-year ban from journalismposted on: 2010/07/05

Further to the Urgent Appeal issued on 24 June 2009 and the subsequent update of 15 September 2009, Front Line has received the following new information regarding the prosecution of human rights defender and journalist Ms Jila Baniyaghoob: On 27 June 2010, Jila Baniyaghoob's lawyer lodged an appeal against the 8 June 2010 sentencing of Jila Baniyaghoob to one year in prison and to a 30-year ban from journalism by the Revolutionary Court in Tehran.

Uganda: Sustained acts of intimidation and judicial harassment against six human rights defenders posted on: 2009/07/23

Six human rights defenders, Mr. Gerard Kankya, Mr Dan Rubonbora, Mr William Gonza, Mr Prosper Businge, Mr Joram Bintamanya and Mr Stephen Rwagweri, team members and volunteers of Twerwaneho Listeners Radio Club in the Rwenzori Region of Uganda have been facing sustained acts of intimidation and judicial harassment since January 2007. The Twerwaneho Listerners Radio Club is a legally registered radio programme which broadcasted programmes on human rights-based issues which aims to hold public leaders more accountable.

Russian Federation: Moscow Gay Pride banned for the fourth timeposted on: 2009/05/14

Front Line is concerned following reports that the Moscow authorities have banned a demonstration in support of tolerance and respect for rights and freedoms of the LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender) community in the Russian Federation and Belarus, called 'Slavic Pride 2009'. This demonstration is organised by Project GayRussia, which was founded in May 2005 to fight against discrimination against Gays and Lesbians in Russia. Project GayRussia is the Russian coordinator of the International Day Against Homophobia, which takes place annually on 17 May.
