Human rights defender, Dr Humberto Prado Sifontes, has been targeted in a number of statements made by public officials, including the President, and accused of instigating violent incidents within the prison system in Venezuela.

Dr Humberto Prado Sifontes is a lawyer and the Director of the Observatorio Venezolano de Prisiones– OVP (Venezuelan Prisons Observatory). The OVP documents cases of violations against, and promotes the rights of, persons in detention in Venezuela.

In 2009 Dr Humberto Prado Sifontes was the winner of the Canadian Embassy in Venezuela's first human rights award, and in 2004 he was elected an Ashoka Fellow. Front Line previously issued an appeal on 11 June 2010 regarding a campaign of intimidation and harassment against Dr Humberto Prado Sifontes as a result of his legitimate human rights work.

On 6 November 2010 the Nueva Prensa de Guyana newspaper reported on a campaign that had been launched on the previous day by the Ombudsman Ms Gabriela Ramírez.

On 27 September 2010 the home of human rights defender, Ms Alicia Morales, was broken into and ransacked by unknown persons. The perpetrators took only a military saber belonging to her father. Alicia Morales is a member of the San Rafael branch of the Asamblea Permanente por los Derechos Humanos (Permanent Assembly for Human Rights – APDH) and is currently acting as a complainant and witness in ongoing court hearings in San Rafael, Mendoza Province, regarding crimes against humanity committed under the Argentinian military junta. Alicia Morales is a former political prisoner and the widow of Juan José Galamba, who was disappeared in 1978.

Russia: "Stop the Intimidation of Russian NGOs" - Joint statement by leading NGOsposted on: 2010/09/21

The Joint Statement says that "from 13-16 September 2010 in Moscow and a number of other cities prosecutor’s bodies carried out mass unscheduled checks of unprecedented scale and haste. They appeared simultaneously at the offices of several dozen leading Russian nongovernmental organisations defending human rights and the interests of the public, as well as those involved in socio-economic issues".
