Journalist harassed after press briefing in Bahrainposted on: 2011/07/17

Following a press briefing organised by the Irish delegation of medical, political and human rights figures at the end of their visit to Bahrain on 14 July 2011 the journalist Ms Reem Khalifa was surrounded by pro-Government protesters and abused and harassed. The protesters then called the police and claimed one of their number had been struck on the jaw. Eye witnesses to the encounter have testified that no person was struck and that it was Ms Reem Khalifa who was the victim of harassment and that she then walked away from the confrontation in the hotel lobby.

The Irish delegation press briefing had been disrupted by a small group of women who shouted repeatedly. Delegation members were interviewed by a number of journalists including Reem Khalifa at the end of the briefing. When Reem Khalifa went to exit through the lobby of the Ramada Palace Hotel she was surrounded by a small group of women who shouted abuse at her, seemingly because she had been undertaking her legitimate journalistic activity and interviewing members of the delegation.

On 21 May 2011 human rights defender and journalist Mr Nelson Orrego received a death threat via email to his workplace. Nelson Orrego has been working as a journalist with Periferia Prensa Alternativa (Periferia Alternative Press) since 2009, and has investigated and published various articles relating to victims of crimes carried out by paramilitary and drug-trafficking groups.

Oman – Judicial prosecution against journalist Mr A’sem Al-Sheedi for writing on police corruptionposted on: 2009/12/21

On 8 December 2009, the general director of the Police and Customs in Oman submitted a penal suit against Mr A’sem Al-Sheedi, accusing him of denouncing the police in an article published in Oman newspaper on 7 December 2009. A’sem Al-Sheedi was summoned by the Prosecution Office on 12 December 2009 and charged with "slander against the police apparatus" and "false testimony", for refusing to reveal his source of information.

Sri Lanka – Journalist and human rights defender, Mr J. S. Tissanayagam, sentenced to 20 years hard labour posted on: 2009/08/31

Human rights defender and journalist, Mr J. S. Tissanayagam, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison, on 30 August 2009, for "causing communal disharmony," inciting "racial hatred" and "supporting terrorism" under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA). J.S. Tissanayagam is a freelance journalist for The Sunday Times and The Daily Mirror as well as chief editor of Outreach Multimedia.
