Honduras: LGBT human rights defender beaten and assaulted in police custody

Donny Reyes is the Treasurer of Arcoiris, the Rainbow Association for Lesbians, Gays, Transvestites and Bisexuals in Honduras. He was arrested outside his office, taken into police custody, beaten and assaulted. No one has yet been charged.  Read More

Iran: Arrest of Zeinab Bayzeydi, Women’s Rights Activist in Mahabad Kurdistan

Posted 18/07/2008 Zeinab Bayzeydi, women’s rights activist, member of the Human Rights Organization of Kurdistan and a member of the One Million Signatures Campaign in the city of Mahabad in Kurdistan Province, was arrested on 9 July 2008. On 5 July 2008, Zeinab Bayzeyd was reportedly summoned by telephone for questioning and interrogated for several hours. She was told to return for interrogation again on 9 July 2008, and after three hours of interrogation, she was arrested on the order of the courts and transferred to a detention center in Mahabad, managed by the Ministry of Information and Security.

Uzbekistan: Journalist and human rights defender Salijon Abdurahmanov detained

Front Line is deeply concerned following the arrest and detention of human rights defender Salijon Abdurahmanov on 7 June 2008, after drugs were planted in his car. Salijon Abdurahmanov is a founding member and leading journalist with Uznews.net, a member of the Real Union of Journalists of Uzbekistan, and a member of the Committee to Protect Individuals' Rights in Karakalpakstan. He has also worked for Radio Liberty and the Institute for War and Peace Reporting, and has spoken out against human rights violations and restrictions on freedom of expression in Uzbekistan.  Read More

Iran: Arrest of nine women's rights defenders during peaceful demonstration

Front Line is deeply concerned following the arrest of nine women's rights defenders during peaceful demonstration outside the Rahe Abrisham Gallery in Tehran, on 12 June 2008. The women's rights defenders, Aida Saadat, an online journalist for Etemad and Change for Equality; Nasrin Sotoode, a women's rights lawyer; Jelve Javaheri, an online journalist for the Change for Equality website; Jilla Baniyagoub, an online journalist with Sarmayeh and the Canon Zeman Irani; Sarah Loghmani and Farideh Ghaeb, both online journalists for Canon Zeman Irani; Alieh Motalbezadeh, a journalist and photographer; and women's rights defenders, Nahid Mirhaj and Nafiseh Azad, were meeting to celebrate the National Day of Solidarity of Iranian Women in objection to discriminatory laws against women in Iran and to review the achievements of the women's rights movement through similar meetings over previous years.  Read More

Mexico: Continued detention of five indigenous rights defenders and risk of imminent arrest of another ten defenders

Front Line is deeply concerned following reports of the continued detention of Natalio Ortega Cruz, Romualdo Santiago Enedina, Raúl Hernández Abundio, Orlando Manzanarez Lorenzo and Manuel Cruz Victoriano, all of whom are members of the Organización del Pueblo Indígena Me'phaa (Organisation of the Me'phaa Indigenous People, OPIM). They were arrested on 18 April 2008 and detained in Ayutla, in the State of Guerrero, and are among a group of fifteen OPIM members whose arrests had been ordered on 11 April 2008. The remaining ten members of the OPIM are reportedly at risk of arrest at any time. Since 2002, the OPIM has worked in the defence of indigenous rights in the communities of Ayutla de los Libres and Acatepec, Costa Montaña de Guerrero.  Read More
