China: Renewed torture of human rights defender Liu Jie while undergoing re-education through labour

Front Line is deeply concerned following new reports that human rights defender Liu Jie has been tortured during her re-education through labour (RTL). Liu Jie has been active in rural communities and has campaigned for political and legal reforms in China. Front Line previously expressed its concerns regarding the treatment of Liu Jie in an urgent action of 18 June 2008. Front Line is deeply concerned following reports of the disappearance of human rights defender Zeng Jinyan on 7 August 2008. Zeng Jinyan is married to jailed human rights defender Hu Jia, co¬founder of the Beijing Aizhixing Institute for Health Education, a non-governmental organisation which promotes public awareness and education on the issue of HIV/ AIDS. Hu Jia was sentenced to 3 ½ years in prison in April 2008.  Read More

Front Line is deeply concerned following reports of the formal arrest and detention of human rights defender Huang Qi. Huang Qi is a human rights defender, based in Chengdu City in Sichuan province and founder of the Tianwang Human Rights Centre, who had been advocating on behalf of parents whose children were killed when their schools collapsed following the earthquake of 12 May 2008. Huang Qi previously spent five years in prison on charges of ''inciting subversion of state power," in connection with articles posted on his website www.64tianwang.com, and was released from jail in 2005.  Read More

Front Line is deeply concerned following reports of the trial of human rights defender, Hu Jia, on 18 March 2008 and the charges of subversion against him. Hu Jia works for the rights of those suffering from HIV/ AIDS in rural China. Chinese human rights defender, Chen Xiaoming, dies shortly after release according to statement by HRIC, Human Rights in China.

According to a recent report by Human Rights in China (HRIC) the organisation has learned that Shanghai human rights defender Chen Xiaoming died on July 1, shortly after being released on medical parole. Numerous earlier requests by Chen's family for medical parole had been refused.  Read More
