On 27 April 2010, human rights defenders in El Frente de Mujeres Defensoras de la Pachamama (Women Defenders of Mother Earth) in the parish of Molleturo in Cuenca, Ecuador, including the organisation's president, Ms Rosío Pérez, were threatened and intimidated in apparent retaliation for complaints they had filed with the Ministry of the Environment and the Agencia Desconcentrada de Regulación y Control Minero - ADRCM (the Decentralised Agency for Regulation and Control of Mining) on behalf of residents of Piedra Azul regarding the possibility of illegal mining taking place and affecting water supplies in the area. Read More

Colombia: Intimidation and threats against human rights defenders Ms Ingrid Vergara and Mr Juan David Díaz Chamorro

Human rights defenders Ms Ingrid Vergara and Mr Juan David Díaz Chamorro have repeatedly received threats against them, and Ingrid Vergara was the subject of an assassination attempt on 5 February 2010. Ingrid Vergara is the spokesperson for Movement of Victims of State Crimes (MOVICE) in Sucre and Juan David Díaz Chamorro is a member of the same organisation. MOVICE has recently denounced several politicians for having links with paramilitary groups. Its work in this respect has lead to the arrests of several high level politicians. Read More

Dublin: Irish launch of the international campaign “Colombia: Human Rights Defenders Under Threat”

At an event in Dublin today a coalition of Irish and international NGOs joined forces to launch a campaign for the protection of human rights defenders under threat in Colombia. The members of the coalition, ABColombia, Front Line, Trócaire and Christian Aid highlighted the fact that while the recent establishment of a formal dialogue on human rights with Colombia is a positive initiative more should be done since human rights defenders in Colombia still face a critical situation. Read More
